French Plural Agreements: Exercises and Answers

Identify French nouns and their accompanying words to practise plural endings with explained answers.

Updated on

A father and daughter compare single objects and groups with cards.

For French plural agreement practice, begin with a short noun group and find the noun that controls agreement. In “les petites maisons,” the determiner, noun and adjective carry the expected plural forms. This is a grammar-and-spelling activity, distinct from memorizing weekly vocabulary words.

Keep noun-group agreement separate from the verb

Write “le petit chat,” then “les petits chats.” Changing le to les signals the plural; chat and petit take s in this example. The group remains masculine.

Now add a verb: “Les petits chats dorment.” The verb does not simply take the noun’s s. Dorment involves subject–verb agreement and conjugation. Keep that task separate if your child is just beginning noun-group agreement.

The Alloprof word-class reference can help you identify nouns and adjectives first. Our original exercises deliberately begin with regular forms.

Ask three questions

  1. Which word names the thing, person or animal? Underline that noun.
  2. Is it singular or plural in this sentence?
  3. Which determiner and adjective go with it?

Connect the three words with a line so your child can explain the agreement. Do not add s to every nearby word. For example, avec remains unchanged if it appears after “les petits chats.”

Exercise: make the groups plural

Change only the noun groups below.

  1. le petit ballon
  2. la grande maison
  3. la fleur rouge
  4. un livre amusant
  5. le jeune voisin

Then correct this sentence: “Les petite tortues avancent.” The verb is already correct; look for the word describing the noun.

Answers and explanations

  1. les petits ballons
  2. les grandes maisons
  3. les fleurs rouges
  4. des livres amusants
  5. les jeunes voisins

Each adjective keeps the noun’s gender and takes the plural ending used in these examples. In the sentence, write Les petites tortues avancent. Petites agrees with the feminine plural noun tortues.

Use a definite determiner such as la/les for early examples. This avoids introducing the separate choice between de and des before a preceding adjective, as in “de grandes maisons.” It keeps attention on the agreement you intended to practise.

Introduce exceptions separately

These examples are not a rule for every French word. Cheval becomes chevaux, and some nouns or adjectives already end in s or x. Start with the exceptions actually appearing in your child’s school lesson rather than mixing every case into the first activity.

If identifying the words is difficult, use our French noun, verb and adjective exercises. To reuse a grammar pattern while writing a short passage, try a dictation with an answer guide. The English dictation activity works on English spelling patterns; use French examples when the goal is specifically French agreement.
